Designing low-latency, high-engagement live broadcast UI to deliver critical medical safety training during a pandemic.

In 2020, GI operating theatres faced a dual crisis: nurses needed immediate, updated protocols to prevent COVID-19 cross-contamination via endoscopes, while medtech managers faced frozen logistics and couldn't send service technicians to fix equipment breakdowns.

Core Pain Points
Anxiety and Doubt among Healthcare Staffs: High cognitive load and infection anxiety during patient surges. They were unsure if there is any change in cleaning and disinfection process for this new virus.
Isolation of Field Engineers: Service technicians were blocked from visiting clinics. Equipment misuse caused component failures, skyrocketing emergency repair logistics costs.

Yantra Output
We delivered 21 volumes of live training and interactive QA session over YouTube, so that most users (having Youtube installed) can access them with ease and clear their doubts on various matters those might occur due to a sudden pandemic. This is how we addressed certain user pain points.
Implemented high-contrast lower-third overlays with step-by-step sterilization guidelines and live Q&A chat loops directly on the main broadcast screen.
Structured modular 20-minute episodes featuring real-time interactive quiz prompts to verify comprehension and guarantee skill adoption.

System Architecture & Technical Bottlenecks
Network Constraints: Hospital Wi-Fi networks suffered from high jitter and low bandwidth. The broadcast layout was optimised for low-bitrate encoding to maintain readability on small mobile screens.
UI Customization: Standard picture-in-picture feeds prioritized the speaker's face over the hardware. The layout was inverted to make the hands-on equipment demonstration the full-screen canvas, bordered by dynamic telemetry and safety checklists.
Iterative Design Evolution
Phase 1 (Episodes 1–3 Baseline): Traditional webinar layout with a side-by-side presentation deck. Result: High viewer drop-off within 5 minutes due to passive presentation style.
Phase 2 (Episodes 4–21 Refinement): Re-engineered OBS layout into a multi-layer broadcast:
Primary Feed: Direct close-up on endoscope valve assembly and handling.
Lower-Third Graphic Overlay: Step-by-step high-visibility protocol alerts.
Gamified Interaction: Live polls and chat callouts rendered on-screen, driving viewer retention up to 50%.
The Second-Screen Stress Test
The Method: To evaluate the readability and engagement of the broadcast UI, we test the stream layouts using mobile devices placed 3 feet away from the user (simulating a phone propped up on a prep table in a clinic). We measure if the information overlays, text sizes, and live quiz graphics remain highly readable while the user is actively multitasking.
Before Usability Study: A standard picture-in-picture video layout where the speaker's face dominates the screen, leaving medical equipment details small and obscured.
After Usability Study: Implemented a dynamic screen overlay system. The live hands-on equipment demonstration is maximised as the primary canvas, bounded by a high-contrast bottom third overlay displaying real-time safety steps, and automated graphics highlighting interactive quiz prompts to maximise chat engagement.

Next Steps
It was emerging from the pattern that a large number of technicians and nurses are not good with English, It is difficult to conduct live sessions in every language yet we have to reach maximum audience. So, we decided to trim the recorded videos in smaller episodes and created a playlist with different language captions.
The Curb Cut Effect
Service managers realised that the online sessions costs lesser than the traditional classroom settings and reach way higher audience accross the business zone. The richness of the content is also considerably higher as the professionals can get on-screen information sitting around their won instruments. Even after the pandemic was over, most of the proferssional training workshops are being broadcasted with overlays.
